Take a shot at trying to troubleshoot air conditioning problems in your Pontiac Grand Am before making a costly and time-consuming trip to the dealer or a mechanic. Sometimes air conditioning problems in an automobile can be an easy fix, even for those of us who know nothing about cars.
Start the engine of the car and allow it to run for a few minutes. Adjust the climate controls. If they do not feel right, then the problem is probably in the control panel. If the controls feel fine, but have no effect on the air then it is probably a blown fuse. If you cannot hear the accompanying blowing sound when the air is turned from low to high, then the problem is in the blower motor.
Disconnect the black negative battery cable first when looking for the blower motor. Remove the trim panel and unplug the electrical connectors from the blower motor. Unscrew the retaining screws and remove the blower motor and fan.
Check the control panel next. Disconnect the negative battery cable first. Remove the screws securing the cluster trim plate to the instrument panel and tilt the top of the cluster trim plate downward releasing the clips that mount the bottom of the trim plate to the dash.
Remove the trim plate. Remove the screws attaching the accessory trim center plate to the dash. Tilt the top of the accessory trim plate downward releasing the clips that mount the bottom of the plate to the instrument panel.
Use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws attaching the control assembly to the dash. Remove the control assembly from the dash. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the control assembly.
Replace a blown fuse in your Grand Am easily. There are two interior fuse boxes in Grand Am, but the right fuse will be found on the passenger side. Open the door and pry off the side panel to the right of the dashboard. Use the guide on the inside of the panel to find the right fuse.
