How to Troubleshoot a Chevy Tahoe

When there is a serious problem with your Chevy Tahoe, the Tahoe's check-engine light will come on. This will indicate a problem with any of the sensors, valves, or solenoids on the vehicle. Since these components are responsible for making the Tahoe run properly, you need to address and fix the problem immediately. Replacement parts can be purchased for your vehicle from most auto-parts stores, but before you purchase anything, you need to troubleshoot the problems you're having with your Tahoe.

Things You'll Need

  • Onboard diagnostic (OBD) scanning tool
  • Pull down on the fuse-panel cover with your fingers and set the cover aside. The fuse panel is in the driver's side footwell.

  • Plug the onboard diagnostic scanning tool into the 16-pin plug to the left of the fuse panel and make sure the connection is secure.

  • Turn on the ignition, but do not start the engine. Then, turn on the onboard diagnostic scan tool.

  • Wait for the scan tool to retrieve the trouble codes from the computer. When this is complete, the display on the scan tool will read "OK" and then you can shut off the ignition and unplug the scan tool.

  • Press "Menu" on the scan tool and scroll to the "Stored Code" option on the display screen. Select the "Stored Codes" option and reference your Tahoe's service manual to translate the engine code. This will tell you exactly what is wrong with your Tahoe.
