Instructions for Ignition Lock Replacement on a 1999 Ford Ranger

Ford introduced the Ranger pickup in 1983 to replace the Courier that was being produced by Mazda. The 1999 Ranger was offered with a choice of a 2.5-liter inline-four, 3.0-liter-V-6 gasoline and flex fuel engines, and a 4.0-liter-V-6. You should replace the ignition lock cylinder when signs of wear, such as the key pulling out in any position or binding when turning, first appear.

Things You'll Need

  • Lock cylinder with keys
  • Pin punch
  • Locate access hole for the lock cylinder release. This will be the second hole down from the steering wheel, located on the underside of the steering column just left of the lock cylinder.

  • Rotate the lock cylinder to the run position but don't start the engine. Push the release pin using the pin punch through the access hole and pull the cylinder out.

  • Insert the new ignition key into the new lock cylinder and rotate it to match the old cylinder that was just removed. Insert the lock cylinder into the steering column and rotate the key to the lock position once the cylinder is completely inserted. Rotate the ignition through all of the positions and check for any binding in the ignition.
