How to Remove the Instrument Cluster in a 1996 Nissan Altima

Nissan Altima hit the market in 1993, and has been manufactured in the U.S. ever since. It was originally built in the Smyrna, Tennessee plant until 2004, when production also began in Canton, Mississippi to keep up with the high demand. Replacing the instrument panel is something you can do in your garage or driveway.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Metric wrench set
  • Battery memory saver
  • Install the memory saver per the manufacturer's instructions and remove and isolate the negative battery cable. Using the Phillips screwdriver, remove the steering column cover and lower the tilt to its lowest level.

  • Remove the two lower screws in the knee panel below the steering wheel. Pry the top of the panel out with the trim tool. Disconnect the electrical connectors and set the panel aside.

  • Remove the five screws around the instrument cluster panel. There are three lower and two upper. Remove the screws from the instrument cluster and pull it forward. Take the small flat-head screwdriver and push the center tabs on the harness connectors at the back of the cluster and pull them to disconnect them.

  • Install the wiring harnesses into the new cluster. Push the new cluster in and install the two screws. Install the trim panel screws. Raise the steering wheel to the top position and install the lower knee panel. Insert the clips on the top first, then screw the bottom into place.

  • Install the column cover next by putting the top section on, then the bottom section with the screws. Install the negative battery cable and remove the memory saver.
