How to Remove the Expedition Overhead Console

Removing an overhead console in your Ford Expedition is a fairly straightforward task for anyone with a solid grasp on auto repair. The console houses two storage compartments, handy for stowing sunglasses or garage remotes. The storage compartment doors break easily and the only way to fix them is by removing and replacing the console. Four trim clips, thin metal clips that wrap around studs protruding from the top of the console, hold the Expedition's overhead console in place. These clips seat into holes in the Expedition's ceiling.

Things You'll Need

  • Trim tool
  • Slide the tip of the trim tool between the Expedition's overhead console and the headliner at the rear of the console. Most auto repair stores sell trim tools for about the same price as a quality screwdriver.

  • Pry down on the trim tool to loosen the two rear trim clips that hold the back of the console to the ceiling.

  • Grab the sides of the console with both hands and pull it down from the ceiling manually to finish removing it. If your console has an electronic compass, unplug the wiring connector by hand before pulling the console down completely.
