The 4Runer debuted in 1985 as a rough and tumble SUV that was essentially a Toyota pickup with a removable fiberglass top and a set of optional rear seats. As the 4Runner evolved through the years, it morphed into a more passenger-friendly SUV. By 2006, it had become a plush people hauler with the ability to tackle off-road use. Replacing a headlight in the 2006 4Runner is a fairly simple task, thanks to its uncluttered and relatively roomy engine compartment.
Open your 4Runner’s hood and look on the backside of the headlight assembly to find the two headlight bulbs and their respective wire harnesses. The innermost bulb is the low beam and the outer bulb is the high beam.
Twist the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it and pull it from the headlight assembly. Press and hold the unlocking button on the headlight bulb wiring harness, and unplug the bulb from the harness.
Hold a new headlight bulb – No. H11 for the low-beam headlight or No. 9005 for the high-beam headlight – by its plastic base. Avoid contacting the glass part of the bulb with your bare hands, as this may result in the bulb failing prematurely. Plug the wiring harness into the bulb until you feel it click into place.
Insert the new bulb into the headlight assembly and twist it clockwise to lock it in place. Close the hood.
