How to Reset the Engine Light in a 2000 Ford Taurus

One of the more important indicator lamps on the 2000 Ford Taurus is the "Check Engine" light. The "Check Engine" light comes on when there is a problem with the engine. Usually, once the problem is resolved, the light turns off automatically, but occasionally, the light will stay on even after the issue with the engine is fixed. In these situations, you have to manually reset the engine light with a socket wrench.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Pull the hood-release lever and turn off the engine. Make sure all electrical devices on the Taurus are switched off.

  • Lift the hood and use a socket wrench to remove the negative terminal of the battery.

  • Allow five minutes to pass for all systems to reset on the Ford Taurus.

  • Reconnect the negative terminal to the battery and place the keys into the ignition to check the "Check Engine" light. If it is still on, try once more. Close the hood when done.
