How to Activate a New Tire Sensor for a 2004 Ford Expedition

The valve stems on road tires of Ford's 2004 Expedition are antennas that use radio frequency signals to transmit tire pressure information to the truck's tire pressure monitoring system module about every 60 seconds, once the Expedition is moving at least 20 mph. After replacing a sensor, perform the retraining procedure to turn off the TPMS warning indicator on the instrument cluster. If the Expedition is equipped with the message center, performing the retrain procedure removes the error message from the message center display.

Things You'll Need

  • Tire Pressure Monitor Activation Tool 204-324 or equivalent
  • Turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position. Within two minutes, turn the ignition switch from the "Off" position to the "Run" position three times, ending with it in the "Run" position.

  • Press and release the brake pedal, and then turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position. Within two minutes, turn the ignition switch from the "Off" position to the "Run" position three times, ending with it in the "Run" position. If the procedure has been done correctly to this stage, the horn sounds once and the TPMS indicator flashes to indicate that train mode has been entered successfully. If the Expedition is equipped with the message center, it displays "Train Left Front Tire."

  • Place the activation tool on the valve stem of the front driver-side tire pressure sensor. The horn sounds briefly to indicate the sensor is recognized by the TPMS module. Within two minutes, place the activation tool on the valve stem of the front passenger-side tire pressure sensor. The horn sounds briefly to indicate the sensor is recognized by the TPMS module.

  • Within two minutes, place the activation tool on the valve stem of the rear passenger-side tire pressure sensor. The horn sounds briefly to indicate the sensor is recognized by the TPMS module. Within two minutes, place the activation tool on the valve stem of the rear driver-side tire pressure sensor. The horn sounds once and if the Expedition is equipped with the message center, it will display "Tire Training Mode Complete." Turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position.
