How to Put in a Radio Code in a 2001 VW Cabrio

The radio in a 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio is equipped with an anti-theft mechanism that locks the radio when the power supply is interrupted. The anti-theft functionality isn’t automatically activated from the factory, but if you’ve activated it and have a dead car battery or need to remove the radio for repair, it will lock up until the correct security code is entered. If you install a radio from a different vehicle or replace the instrument panel, the radio will also enter “locked” mode. The code number for the radio is listed on the radio card in your Volkswagen owner’s manual.

  • Turn on the ignition, then press the power button on the radio. The radio will display “SAFE” and then “1000” on its screen.

  • Use the preset buttons “1” though “4” to enter the four digit code on the radio card. Button “1” enters the first digit; button “2” enters the second digit, and so on.

  • Press the right side of the rocker button and hold it until the radio confirms that the anti-theft code is accepted. The radio system will sound a short beep when the code is accepted, and the small diode on the radio will begin to blink.

  • Turn on the radio and test all of its functions to ensure that it operates properly.
