How to Change the Battery on a 2008 GMC Acadia

When you disconnect the battery on your 2008 GMC Acadia, there is no adaptive relearn process to contend with once the battery is reconnected. If you want to use a memory-saver device to save your radio presets, you can; but it isn't necessary.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Extension
  • Ratchet
  • Battery terminal and post cleaner
  • Torque wrench
  • Cycle through your radio presets and write them down to aid in reprogramming the radio. Turn all electrical accessories off, and ensure that all lights are off. Turn the ignition switch off and remove the key.

  • Find the battery cover below the floor mat that is just behind the front seat. Remove the battery cover fastener and lift the cover off the battery box.

  • Using a ratchet, extension and socket, loosen the battery negative cable terminal nut. Remove the terminal from the negative battery post. Locate the two electrical quick-connectors near the negative cable, and disconnect them. Route the negative cable away from the battery post.

  • Locate the quick-connector on the positive battery cable and disconnect it. Open the cap on the plastic positive battery cable terminal cover. Loosen the terminal nut and remove the terminal.

  • Find the battery vent hose and pull it out of the hole in the battery box. Remove the battery retainer hardware, using a ratchet, extension and socket. Lift the battery up and out of the box. Remove the vent tube from the old battery, and install it on the new one. If the new battery does not have an orifice for the vent tube, do not use it. Take the battery back and get the right one. The battery must be vented.

  • Clean the posts on the battery and the cable terminals, using the battery terminal and post cleaner. Lower the new battery into the box. Install the retainer hardware and torque the retainer bolt to 18 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and socket. Install the vent hose in the hole.

  • Install the positive battery cable terminal on the battery post, then tighten the terminal nut to 80 inch-pounds, using a torque wrench, extension and socket. Snap the positive terminal cover cap into place. Connect the positive cable electrical quick-connector.

  • Connect the negative cable quick-connectors. Install the negative battery cable terminal on the negative battery post and torque the terminal nut to 80 inch-pounds. Install the battery box cover and fastener, then torque the fastener to 14 inch-pounds.

  • Reprogram your radio presets.
