The blower resistor for your 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe is a critical component for the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system. The resistor works in conjunction with the fan speed selector switch, located on the center dash console. A faulty resistor unit may cause one or several fan speed selections to quit working. Replacing the resistor unit is an easy task, requiring only simple hand tools to complete.
Examine the underside of the dashboard and locate the protective cover above the front foot wells.
Remove the seven 7 mm bolts that secure the plastic cover to the underside of the dashboard, using the appropriate size socket and ratchet.
Pull the cover from the passenger side foot well to expose the round-shaped blower motor cover and attached blower motor resistor. The blower motor resistor features a rectangular wire harness connection and two bolts that secure the unit to the blower motor.
Disconnect the rectangular-shaped harness plug from the resistor unit. Take note that you must lift the small locking tab on the harness plug while performing the disconnection procedure.
Remove the two bolts that secure the round-shaped plastic cover to the blower motor, using an appropriate size socket and ratchet. This will allow you to gain better access to the remaining single-wire connector for the blower motor.
Disconnect the single-wire connection from the side of the blower motor. Unlike the resistor unit harness, you must depress the locking tab for the blower motor connection for disconnection.
Remove the two bolts that secure the resistor unit to the blower motor housing, using an appropriate size socket and ratchet.
Slide the resistor out of the housing. Slide the replacement resistor unit into the blower motor housing and replace the bolts. Reconnect the single-wire connection to the blower motor and secure the round-shaped cover.
Connect the rectangular-shaped harness connector to the replacement resistor unit.
Reposition the protective cover for the underside of the dashboard and thread the seven 7 mm bolts by hand to secure the cover. Finish tightening the bolts with the 7 mm socket and ratchet to complete the replacement procedure.
