How to Remove the AC Evaporator From a 98 Civic

The A/C evaporator of your 1998 Honda Civic is very important for your vehicle's air conditioning to work properly. If the evaporate begins to malfunction, you may find that the air blowing from the vents is not cool or warm. You may even find that smoke is coming out of the vents. In this situation, you can easily remove the evaporator to repair or replace it.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean gloves
  • Socket wrench
  • Paper towels
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Take the vehicle to a certified Honda dealership and have them remove the refrigerant from your vehicle. You cannot safely remove the refrigerant yourself and it is illegal to leak the refrigerant into the atmosphere.

  • Put on the clean gloves. Open the Civic's hood and remove the battery. Use a socket wrench to remove the negative terminal, then the positive terminal, then the securing bracket.

  • Use a socket wrench to remove the refrigerant hoses on the firewall. Plug them up with paper towels to prevent any dirt from entering the lines.

  • Open the glove box and use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws from the hinges. Remove the glove box from the Civic.

  • Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts from the securing panel behind the glove box. Remove the securing panel.

  • Disconnect the refrigerant hose from the evaporator. Disconnect the evaporator's wiring connector. Remove the securing bolts from the evaporator with a socket wrench and pull the evaporator out of the Civic.
