How to Rebuild a Mikuni Fuel Pump

The Mikuni fuel pump comes in a variety of different models, but they all follow the same construction design. This makes them easy to rebuild as the assembly is fairly simple. More work is involved in disconnecting the pumps than is involved in rebuilding them for further use. The process, however, tends to be fairly simple as long a few precautions are followed.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Crescent wrench
  • Shop rag
  • Mikuni fuel pump rebuild kit
  • Find the fuel pump on your motorcycle or scooter as it is currently connected. Trace the inlet hose from the carburetor to the pump. Do the same for the hose going to the engine intake. Use a screwdriver or crescent wrench to unbolt the pump from the motorcycle or scooter frame.

  • Use the screwdriver to loosen the banjo clamps holding the hoses on the inlet and outlet nipples of the pump. Pull the hoses off once the clamps are loose. Place the freed pump in a shop rag to catch any residue fuel that may be inside.

  • Use a smaller Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws that hold the fuel pump body together. Pull the screws out when loose and put them in a safe space. Take out the old fuel pump gasket and discard it.

  • Purchase a Mikuni fuel pump rebuild kit for your model pump and install the new gasket in the fuel pump. Close up the pump sides previously taken apart and seal them with the new screws that come with the kit. Tighten the screws with the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Reverse the procedure in Steps 1 and 2 and reinstall the pump in your scooter or motorcycle. Save the old pump screws as extras if you need them in the future.
