2003 Cavalier Blower Motor Installation

Chevrolet released the Cavalier in the 1982 model year, and left the compact vehicle relatively unchanged until 1995. In the 1995 model year, Chevy completely redesigned the Cavalier and refreshed the look in 2003. The 2003 Cavalier came standard with a 140-horsepower, 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine. The 2003 Cavalier also came standard with air-conditioning. A blower motor and fan circulate the cooled or heated air throughout the Cavalier's heating and cooling ducts. When the blower motor fails, you may notice little or no airflow from the vents. Replacing the blower motor on the 2003 Cavalier is a quick process.

Things You'll Need

  • Small chisel
  • Hammer
  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Torque wrench
  • Adjust the passenger's seat as far back as it will go. Look under the passenger's side of the dashboard and locate the blower motor, which attaches to the plastic heater box.

  • Unplug the wiring harness from the blower motor, by pressing the locking button and pulling the harness from the blower motor.

  • Remove the retaining heat stakes -- rivet-like objects securing the blower motor -- using a small chisel and a hammer. Pull the blower motor down and out of the Cavalier.

  • Set the new blower motor in the heater box and tighten the self-tapping bolts -- included with the blower motor -- until they secure the blower motor, using a ratchet and socket. Back the bolts out two or three turns and tighten them to 3 to 4 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and socket.

  • Plug the wiring harness into the blower motor.
