How to Remove Climate Control From a Mercedes

The climate control unit on your Mercedes vehicle has several electrical components, such as light bulbs and buttons, that may fail over time. In order to replace those components, you will need to remove the climate control unit from the vehicle. The climate control unit is held in by special clips that can only be unlocked with a specific radio-removal key from Mercedes-Benz. This key unlocks both the radio and the climate control unit. With the key, you should expect to be able to remove the unit in less than 10 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Radio-removal key
  • Open the vehicle's hood and disconnect the battery's negative cable with a socket wrench.

  • Insert the key into the two holes on the sides of the climate control unit. When inserting the key, be sure to have the key's flat side facing outward. Twist the key clockwise to release the clips. Once the clips are released, the unit will be loose.

  • Pull the climate control unit out of the vehicle. Disconnect the electrical wiring connector at the rear of the unit and remove it from the vehicle.
