Where Is the Fuel Shut-Off Valve on a 1989 Ford Ranger?

Your 1989 Ford Ranger is equipped with a fuel cutoff switch for your protection. In the event of an accident, the switch automatically cuts the power to the fuel pump, reducing the risk of a fire.

Cutoff Switch Location

  • Your fuel cutoff switch is located under the carpet of the passenger-side foot well, under the dash and on the toe-board, to the right of the transmission hump.

How It Works

  • The fuel cutoff switch is an inertia-activated unit that functions much like a circuit breaker in your home. When the unit senses a rapid deceleration consistent with a crash, the reset button pops up, breaking the electrical circuit and cutting the power to the fuel pump. Once tripped, the switch must be manually reset.

Reset Procedure

  • Turn the vehicle off. Ensure that no fuel leaks or fuel smell is present. Press the reset button on the top of the switch. Cycle your ignition on and off several times -- 5 seconds each time -- to build up fuel pressure in the system. Check again for leaks or fuel smell. If none, start your vehicle and resume normal operation. In the event of an actual collision, have the car professionally inspected for your own safety.
