You should can install a fuel pressure gauge on your Dodge Ram diesel to get an idea on the fuel pressure that is present at all times. Gauges are available in an array of configurations and maximum pressure capacities. A pressure gauge with a 16 psi capacity is a safe bet.
Park the truck in a well-lit area and pop open the hood. Engage the parking brake and turn off the ignition.
Search the engine bay for a location to place the sending unit of the fuel pressure gauge. The line between the fuel filter and the VP pump is the best location to install the sending unit. This will also prevent fuel pressure gauge damage because the unit will be isolated against severe vibration and shock. Also determine where you will install the fuel pressure gauge inside the vehicle. The installation will depend on the type of pressure gauge that you have.
Cut the fuel line in between the fuel filter and the VP pump. Grab the grease gun hose (around 10 to 12 inches long) and thread one end into the elbow fitting. Use Teflon thread sealant when threading the hose to the fitting. Attach the other end of the hose to the T-fitting. Screw in the sender unit on one side of the fitting. The T-fitting is equipped with a 1.8-inch threaded tap and will make installation easier and safer. Attach the pressure switch on the other end of the T-fitting.
Tighten all connections and hoses by turning the lock nuts with a screwdriver or wrench. Wipe off excess fuel drippings and dirt with a cotton rag.
Run the wire of the sending unit from the firewall to the dashboard. Install the gauge on the dash and plug in the wire. Refer to the installation manual of your fuel pressure gauge for proper procedures.
