DIY Honda Accord V6 Service

The Honda Accord V6 has a set maintenance schedule you should follow to keep the engine in good working condition. Maintenance includes checking and changing fluids, the ignition and the cooling system. The schedule encompasses checkpoints at 3,000, 7,500, 15,000, 30,000, 60,000, 90,000, 105,000 and 120,000 miles. A time frame is associated with the mileage since some drivers may not reach a certain checkpoint for some time after the time the maintenance should be performed.

  • Change the oil every 3,000 miles or every three months, whichever comes first. The 2006 and newer model Accords have a maintenance minder system installed that reminds the owner to complete certain tasks within a certain time frame or mileage threshold . Additionally, you should check the oil each time you fill up with gas, or at least once per week; that way you can catch an oil leak and prevent potential damage to your vehicle. Check all other fluids at the same time, including the coolant, power steering pump fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid and windshield washer fluid.

  • Complete the 7,500-mile checklist every 7,500 miles. Check the wiper blades and replace them as necessary. Check the battery. If the battery is a serviceable type, where you need to add water, use only non-chlorinated water (most batteries are nonserviceable as of the mid 1990s). Check the cooling system; ensure that the engine is cold before opening the radiator cap.

  • Rotate the tires every 7,500 miles. The two rear tires should be moved up to the front, and the left front rotates to the right rear. The right front rotates to the left rear. Check the seat belts to ensure proper and smooth operation.

  • Inspect the brakes every 15,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Replace the brake pads and/or shoes as necessary. Do not allow the pads or shoes to get too low, or else you could blow a caliper or wheel cylinder. If you hear the brakes squeaking prior to the 15,000-mile mark, replace them. Inspect the steering, ensuring that there is no freeplay in the steering. Inspect all hoses -- vacuum, water and fuel -- and replace as necessary. While completing the oil change (which is done every 3,000 miles and falls within this checkpoint), check the exhaust system to ensure that it is not loose and that there are no rust holes forming.

  • Replace the air filter and interior ventilation filter every 30,000 miles or 24 months, whichever comes first. Check the serpentine belt, and replace it if it looks worn or cracked.

  • Flush the cooling system every 60,000 miles or 60 months, whichever comes first. Fill the system with fresh coolant.

  • Complete a transmission service every 90,000 miles or 60 months, whichever comes first. Replace the transmission fluid and the filter, which is located inside the transmission pan.

  • Replace the spark plugs with platinum or iridium plugs every 105,000 miles,.as well as the timing belt. Haynes recommends checking the water pump at this time, but mechanics advise that you go ahead and replace the water pump if it has not been recently changed. The timing belt operates the water pump, so it is only a matter of a few more bolts to remove the water pump when you are changing the timing belt.

  • Change the manual transaxle fluid at 120,000 miles or 72 months, whichever comes first, if your Accord has a manual transmission.
