How to Correct Engine Code 157

Error code 157 on your vehicle indicates a problem with your mass airflow sensor. The mass airflow sensor gives a reading based on the air intake and output within the engine compartment. A properly functioning sensor will contribute to better fuel economy. In some instances, you may be able to clean your mass airflow sensor to clear the error code, but the error will most likely return in a short time. Fortunately, replacing the mass airflow sensor is a reasonably simple repair.

Things You'll Need

  • MAF sensor
  • Wrench set
  • Torx screwdriver
  • Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Depending on your vehicle, you will either unscrew the negative terminal from its post or loosen the nut securing the terminal to the post with a wrench.

  • Locate the throttle body and the air filter box. The MAF sensor connects the harness to the throttle body and air filter box.

  • Press in on the release tab and pull the harness out of the MAF sensor.

  • Remove the Torx screws holding the MAF sensor using a Torx screwdriver.

  • Pull the MAF sensor out of its housing.

  • Clean the MAF housing with a damp rag and remove all dust and debris from around the area.

  • Insert the new MAF sensor into the housing. Make sure the intake and exhaust ports are correctly oriented in the same manner as the old MAF sensor.

  • Reattach the sensor by securing it with the Torx screws.

  • Reattach the harness by snapping it back into place. Reconnect the negative battery cable to its post and tighten the retaining nut, if there is one, with a wrench. Close the hood.
