The stress and strain of the window glass can wear on the plastic window clips on a Pontiac Grand Am, eventually leading to fractures and damage in the clips. The clips are also known to occasionally break under normal circumstances. Luckily, most Grand Am owners can remove the window glass and replace the clips on their own. Most owners can complete the task within a hour with commonly-owned tools.
Insert a small pry bar behind the rear view mirror trim plate and pry it away from the door trim panel.
Pull the door handle to the open position to access the Torx retaining screw holding the door handle trim piece on place. Remove the retaining screw with a Torx screwdriver and pull the door handle trim piece from the door trim panel.
Lower the window glass into the door. Pull the window switch panel up from the door trim panel and unplug the electrical connector from the rear of the switch. Pull the window crank handle from the window crank on models equipped with manual windows.
Unscrew the retaining screws on the door trim panel with a Phillips screwdriver. The three screws are located behind the plastic reflector on the rear of the door, under the arm pull and just below the window switch panel that was previously removed.
Insert a small pry bar behind the door trim panel. Pry the retainers on the rear of the door trim panel out of the retaining holes on the door then pull the door trim panel off of the door.
Peel the plastic water shield away from the door.
Remove the bolts holding the bottom of the window glass to the window regulator with a socket wrench. You may need to temporarily install the window switch panel or window crank to move the window to access the bolts.
Raise the window glass by hand through the window opening. Tilt the window glass once it's raised from the door and remove it from the window opening.
Remove the window clips from the bottom of the window glass with a Phillips screwdriver.
Install new window clips on the bottom of the window glass with a Phillips screwdriver.
Insert the window glass through the window opening and lower it into the door, resting the window clips onto the window regulator.
Install the bolts holding the window glass to the regulator with a socket wrench.
Stick the plastic water shield onto the door.
Push the door trim panel back onto the door, lining up the retainers on the rear of the trim panel with the holes on the door.
Install the three retaining screws on the door trim panel with a Phillips screwdriver.
Plug in the electrical connector to the rear of the window switch panel. Set the window switch panel into the recess on the door trim panel. On models equipped with manual windows, push the window crank handle back onto the window crank.
Guide the door handle trim piece onto the door. Install the Torx retaining screw with a Torx screwdriver.
Push the rear view mirror trim plate back onto the door, aligning the retainers on the rear of the trim plate with the holes on the body.
