How to Wire a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado Brake Controller

If you wish to install trailer brakes to your 1997 Chevrolet Silverado, you will also need to install a brake controller to help you manage the brakes. The brake controller is connected to the electrical outlet box to the right of the parking brake clutch pedal. You simply plug the brake controller's wiring connector into the designated outlet in the electrical outlet box and then you are good to go.

  • Turn the Silverado's engine off and remove the keys from the ignition. Apply the parking brake. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal on the battery. If you have not already done so, install the trailer brakes.

  • Remove the cover from the electrical outlet box and locate the outlet labeled "TRAILER."

  • Install the brake controller's connector to the trailer outlet. Many trailer brakes come with an adapter or wiring kit to make the brakes compatible with certain vehicles. If necessary, install the required equipment in order to connect the trailer brakes. Consult your trailer brake manufacturer'ss manual for directions.

  • Mount the controller itself onto the dashboard of the Silverado in order to have easy access to it. Make the final electrical connections following the brake controller manufacturer's direction. Unplugging and removing the controller may facilitate this.
