How to Replace a Tailgate Latch

When the locking mechanism or latch on the tailgate of your vehicle breaks, you will need to replace it. Replacing the tailgate latch requires accessing the handle mechanism inside the tailgate. You can purchase a replacement latch for the vehicle at an auto supply store.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Remove the screws that attach the cover plate over the tailgate by using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Set the screws aside.

  • Take off the tailgate cover and set it aside. This will expose the control rod for the latch handle.

  • Disengage the control rod from the handle using the flat-head screwdriver. Remove the latch handle, and then find the latching rods or linkages for the latch assembly. Disconnect these from the latch assembly.

  • Remove the bolts that secure the lock assembly to the tailgate with the socket wrench. Pull the lock assembly off the vehicle.

  • Place the new lock assembly into the tailgate. Insert the bolts back into the lock assembly and tighten them with the socket wrench.

  • Attach the latching rods back onto the latch assembly. Set the handle back in place, and attach it to the control rod.

  • Set the tailgate cover back on the tailgate and secure it with the screws.
