My Dodge Ram Speedometer Won't Move

The speedometer on your Dodge Ram is analog and tells you what speed you are going. If the speedometer on your Ram stops working, it is because the speedometer cable has gone bad and needs to be replaced. If your speedometer cable goes out, you should change it immediately because driving without it can be dangerous. Replacement speedometer cables can be bought at either the junk yard or an auto parts store.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Screwdriver
  • Pop the hood on your Ram and remove its negative battery cable using the socket set.

  • Get beneath your Ram and use you screwdriver to disconnect the speedometer cable from your transmission. Once it is removed, attach the new speedometer cable to your transmission.

  • Follow the old cable up though your engine compartment to behind the instrument pane on your dash. Remove the old cable as you go and insert the new cable into the plastic clips that hold them down.

  • Remove the two screws below the bottom lip of your Ram's instrument panel and pull the plastic shield forward. Pull the instrument panel slightly forward. Pull the end of the old cable from behind your speedometer. Use your pliers to pull the new cable through and then attach it to the back of the speedometer.

  • Replace your Ram's negative battery cable.
