The Driver's Door Won't Lock on My 2003 Honda CR-V

If the driver's door on your 2003 Honda CR-V won't lock, you could have an issue with the locking mechanism inside the door. The lock cylinder could be stuck or, worse, it might be broken, in which case you will need to install a new locking mechanism. Accessing the CR-V's locking mechanism requires you to disassemble the door, but it is a straightforward task you should be able to complete in about one hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the interior door handle cover. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the mounting screws from the interior door handle and disconnect its electrical connector. Pull out the interior door handle.

  • Remove the armrest mounting screws with a Phillips screwdriver and pull the armrest off the door.

  • Remove the mirror trim cover with a flat-head screwdriver.

  • Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry out all seven clips securing the CR-V's door panel. Pull the door panel off the door to gain access to the locking mechanism.

  • Raise the window and peel off the watershield.

  • Disengage the plastic clips holding the locking mechanism in place using a flat-head screwdriver.

  • Remove the lock cylinder by prying off the retaining clip on the locking mechanism. Often, the problem with a malfunctioning locking mechanism is that the cylinder is stuck. Loosen the cylinder and try locking the door. If the cylinder is broken, you will need to install a replacement cylinder.

  • Reassemble the locking mechanism and reattach the watershield.

  • Reassemble the door panel and reattach all of its components by following the disassembly steps in reverse.
