How to Replace the Rear Window Glass on a Crown Vic

Having a damaged back windshield in your Crown Victoria is a serious problem. Beyond the obvious drawbacks of the cracked window reducing your visibility and making it less aesthetically pleasing, a visibly damaged back windshield can earn you a hefty fine. While repairing a damaged rear windshield is not a task you want to put off, failing to install the windshield correctly will make your Crown Victoria less safe in the event of a collision.

Things You'll Need

  • Crown Victoria trim tool or flat head screwdriver
  • Razor knife
  • Crowbar
  • Assistant
  • Clean cloths
  • Urethane primer
  • Urethane adhesive
  • Remove the trim from around the window. You can buy a trim tool specific to the Crown Victoria at any auto parts store, but in the absence of this tool, a flat head screwdriver will work. Put the blade of the tool under the trim and pry it up, making sure not to break the tabs underneath that hold the trim on.

  • Cut through the adhesive band holding the window in the frame using a razor knife. Make sure to cut it as evenly as possible.

  • Insert the crowbar under one of the bottom corners of the window and force it upward. Once it's loose in the frame, work your way around the frame until the entire window is loose.

  • Remove the window from the car. With the help of an assistant, pick the window up and set it aside.

  • Clean the area around the frame and in the groove with a clean, wet cloth. Once it's clean, thoroughly dry it with a clean dry cloth.

  • Paint a coat of urethane primer around the groove where the window sits.

  • Lay down a band of urethane adhesive over the primer. If the adhesive doesn't go on over the primer, it will not bond to the window.

  • Pick up the new window with the help of your assistant and set it into the frame. Make sure it is right side up, and that it lies flat and evenly in the frame.

  • Replace the trim.
