S10 Pilot Bearing Replacement Instructions

The pilot bearing on an S10 is located in a cavity in the center of the flywheel on a manual transmission only. It is a cylindrical brass bushing intended to support the input shaft on the transmission. The engine has a flywheel with a clutch and pressure plate attached to it. The front input shaft on the transmission has splines on the end with a smooth post on the very tip of the shaft. The post rides in the pilot bearing and stabilizes the input shaft. This puts a lot less stress on the input shaft bearing in the transmission.

Things You'll Need

  • Hammer
  • Small narrow chisel
  • Common screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Grease
  • Chisel a groove in the pilot bearing on one side, using the chisel and hammer.

  • Pry the bearing out, using a screwdriver to bend the bushing inward to loosen it in its sleeve in the flywheel.

  • Grab the pilot bearing with the pliers and pull it the rest of the way out of the flywheel.

  • Install the new bearing and tap it in evenly until it is flush with the top of the sleeve in the flywheel.

  • Apply a small amount of grease to the inside of the pilot bearing.
