How to Replace the Door Ajar Switch on a 99 Taurus

The door ajar switch on your 99 Ford Taurus is a signaling device designed to chime when a door is not completely shut. The screw in the switch is not difficult to replace, however it will take some work to get to it as it is mounted on the inside of your door. A faulty door ajar switch can sometimes cause your dome light not to go off, creating strain on your battery. If the switch goes out it should be replaced immediately.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Screwdriver
  • T-27 Torx wrench
  • New door switch
  • Lift up the hood for your 1999 Ford Taurus and detach the negative battery cable with your socket set.

  • Remove the screw under the door handle with your screwdriver.

  • Remove the single screw inside of the armrest with a screwdriver.

  • Use your screwdriver to pry the door trim off the door so you can access the inside door panel.

  • Use your Torx wrench to remove the three bolts that hold the door latch in place. These three bolts are located on the side of your door.

  • Pull the door latch out by hand and find the door ajar switch. It is a small, black, plastic piece torpedo-like in shape. Unscrew it by hand and screw the new door ajar switch in place. Slide the door latch back into place and hand thread the Torx screws into place. Tighten these screws with your Torx wrench.

  • Place your door trim back into place and pop it back into position by pushing on it with your hand.

  • Reattach the screw inside of the armrest and the screw beneath the door handle.

  • Reattach the negative battery cable with your socket set, start your 99 Ford Taurus and confirm that the door ajar switch is working.
