How to Use Dupli-Color

Dupli-Color is a manufacturer of automotive paints, primers and coatings for the consumer market. For over 60 years, Dupli-Color has been known for their perfection in touch-up automotive paints. Dupli-Color may be used to touch up faded or damaged areas or to completely change the color of a car. However, a lot depends on the proper use of the products to achieve a satisfying result.

Things You'll Need

  • Soap and water
  • Clean rags
  • Painter's sheeting/Newspaper
  • Painter's tape
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Respirator
  • Spray gun
  • Park the car in a shady area and make sure the wind is not blowing too strongly. Strong winds may interfere with the spray paint and make spray painting difficult.

  • Wash the affected area(s) of the car with water and detergent. Wipe with a clean dry cloth or rag. Make sure there is no oil, dust or dirt at the end of the wash.

  • Sand the area with a soft abrasive, like a fine sandpaper. Make the area rough enough for the primer and paint to strongly bond with the surface. Wipe the area again with a damp rag and wait for it to dry.

  • Cover all other areas of the car that you do not intend to paint. Use newspapers or painter sheets and secure the necessary fit with painter tape or duct tape.

  • Put on the goggles and respirator.

  • Apply a coat of Dupli-Color spray primer with sweeping motions of the spray gun over the entire area to be painted. Hold the spray gun around eight inches away and spray paint well into the sheeting to ensure smooth edges. Wait for the primer to dry.

  • Apply the Dupli-Color spray paint in the same manner as Step 5. Apply thin, even coats. Spray at least two coats and then repeat if necessary. Allow the paint to dry completely before taking the car outdoors again.
