How to Install Trailer Lights on a Ford Explorer

Having trailer lights installed on your Ford Explorer while towing is very important. Trailer lights help prevent accidents by informing other drivers of when you will be turning or braking; they're also required by law. Thankfully, they are also very simple to install. The Ford Explorer has an electrical outlet located under the rear bumper, where the trailer lights can be plugged in and then switched on. It is all very simple and takes only a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Slotted screwdriver
  • Explorer-compatible trailer lights
  • Park the Explorer on a flat surface and apply the parking brake. Turn the engine off.

  • Use a slotted screwdriver to pry off the cover from the electrical outlet located underneath the rear bumper to the left of the license plate.

  • Connect the trailer lights' electrical connector to the outlet. Make sure it is securely connected. Make sure the trailer lights are compatible with the Ford Explorer.

  • Mount the trailer lights according to the directions that accompany it. Most trailer lights come with a type of fastener that you use to clip them onto the object being towed.
