The Subaru Legacy's dash houses many of the automobile's electrical components, such as the radio, the gauge cluster and the air conditioning unit. Accessing any of those electrical devices requires the removal of the Legacy's dash, which is a fairly simple task as the dash is held in place by several screws. Once the screws are removed, you can simply lift the Legacy's dash up and out of the vehicle.
Open the Legacy's hood and use a socket wrench to remove the negative terminal from the battery.
Lift up the gear shift trim using a slotted screwdriver. Detach the two securing screws under the gear shift trim using a cross-head screwdriver.
Pull the A/C unit knobs off with a slotted screwdriver. Pull the A/C unit out using a slotted screwdriver and disconnect its wiring harness.
Remove the two screws securing each kick panel, using a cross-head screwdriver. Pry the kick panels out with a slotted screwdriver.
Open the glove box and empty its contents. Push it up against the dash and pull up to remove it from the dashboard.
Remove the 12 screws holding the the Legacy's dashboard in place. There are four screws along the upper edge of the dash, two screws on each side panel, two under the glove box, and two on the underside of the dash above the instrument cluster.
Pull up on the dashboard to lift it off the Legacy. Disconnect the three wiring harnesses connected to the dash and lift the dashboard out of the vehicle.
