How to Replace a Volkswagen Jetta Combination Switch

The Volkswagen Jetta's combination switch usually controls the rear and front-windshield wipers, turn signals, headlights, dimmers, bright-headlights and windshield-wiper-fluid pump. With so much functionality in a single switch, having one that does not function properly might cause several problems at the same time. These problems could be of such a severity that the car is not legally drivable. Replace a faulty combination switch as soon as possible.

Things You'll Need

  • New combination switch
  • Screwdrivers
  • Wrench set

Removal

  • Disconnect the negative battery lead.

  • Remove the steering wheel. Remove the airbag if the car is so equipped.

  • Unscrew the upper and lower covers on the steering column.

  • Remove the three, switch-assembly retaining screws.

  • Disconnect the wires from the switch assemblies, and remove both switches.

Installation

  • Connect wires to the new combination switches. Attach the wires with the three retaining-screws.

  • Refasten the upper and lower steering-column covers.

  • Reattach the steering wheel and air bag. Do not activate the airbag.

  • Reconnect the negative battery lead. Start the car. Check that the combinations switches have full functionality.
