How to Repair a Volvo 240 Ignition Switch

If you have tested both the starter and alternator but the engine on your Volvo 240 still won't start, it is most likely a problem with your ignition switch. The ignition switch can be found within the steering column. In order to start your vehicle you will need to remove the ignition switch from the steering column and replace it with a new one. You can pick up a replacement ignition switch from your local auto store.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Replacement ignition switch
  • Open up the hood of your Volvo and find the battery. Use a wrench to remove the clamp bolt attached to the negative terminal. Lift the negative cable off the terminal. This will allow you to safely work on the electrical components within the steering column.

  • Enter the drivers side of the vehicle and remove the steering wheel cover. Unclip the plastic connectors around the steering wheel with your hand in order to remove the cover. If you are having difficulty, use a small flat-head screwdriver to pry them off.

  • Locate the horn and airbag if your vehicle has one. Follow the wiring until you locate the electrical connectors for both components. Disconnect them both from the steering wheel. Use a phillips-head screwdriver to remove the mounting screws on the steering column sleeve. Slide the sleeve off the column.

  • Use a wrench to remove the mounting bolts attached to the ignition switch. Place your key in the switch and turn it to the locked position. This will give you access to the retaining pin. Unclip the retaining pin. This will allow you to remove the ignition switch and lock cylinder from the steering column. Disconnect the lock cylinder from the switch.

  • Attach a new switch to the tab on the lock cylinder. Press them together in order to fix it in place. Reattach the lock cylinder and ignition switch to the steering column by following the removal steps in reverse. Attach the negative cable back on to the battery terminal and turn the ignition to check that it now works correctly.
