DIY Truck Bed Organizer Drawer

A truck bed organizer will help keep your personal belongings neat and in place, making them easily accessible whenever they are needed. Making this organizer weatherproof will also ensure flawless operation year-round and provide security for valuable materials. Building your own truck bed organizer will save your belongings from the harsh elements of nature and save you money in the process. Replacing lost, damaged or stolen equipment will be a thing of the past.

Things You'll Need

  • Mechanical tape measure
  • 3/4 inch AA marine-grade plywood
  • Carpenter's framing square
  • Saw
  • Bungee cord
  • Hooks
  • Epoxy
  • Clamps, 36 inches or longer
  • Air compressor
  • Nail gun
  • Pin nails
  • Fiberglass cloth
  • Weather-proof silicone sealant
  • Varnish
  • Brass piano hinge
  • Drill
  • Locking clasps
  • Lifting handles
  • Measure the dimensions of your truck bed to ensure that the organizer will fit correctly.

  • Cut the 3/4 inch AA marine-grade plywood into the four pieces that will form the rectangular shape of the truck bed organizer. Using the measurements of the truck bed, also cut a flat lid out of the 3/4 inch AA marine-grade plywood to securely cover the organizer and its contents. Use a carpenter's framing square to ensure that the measurements are accurate and the corners will be flush.

  • Mix the epoxy materials according to the manufacturer's instructions provided on the label and apply a coating of the epoxy adhesive to both surfaces of the parts to be joined. Clamp the parts securely into place and wipe off any spills or excess epoxy.

  • Drive nails to secure the joints, using a compressor, nail gun and pin nails. Allow all joints to dry completely before continuing.

  • Apply fiberglass cloth to all outside surfaces using the directions on the packaging. This will make your truck organizer impervious to weather conditions. Apply a thin bead of weather-proof sealant around all inside joints to further protect contents against inclement weather. A thin coat of varnish will suffice for the interior of the box.

  • Paint the inner and outer portions of the box to match the truck if desired. The AA marine-grade plywood is a weather resistant material that does not require additional treatment to withstand the forces of nature.

  • Lay the truck bed organizer lid flat with the inner side facing up. Place the hinge on the lid. Mark the spots where you will drill the holes. Drill the holes and attach the hinge with screws to the lid.

  • Drill holes on the bottom part of the truck bed organizer. Using the screws provided in the piano hinge kit, attach the other side of the hinge to the base of the organizer. This will secure the top of the organizer to the back of the box.

  • Secure the contents of the truck bed organizer by attaching a shackle and lock to the front of the box by following the manufacturer's directions.

  • Attach the lift handles to the sides of the box. Measure to the center of the box on both sides and mark where the handles will be attached. Attach the handles using the screws provided with the handles. These handles will be for lifting the box as well as securing it to the truck.
