How to Install a 4.6 Motor Mount

The engine mounts on a 4.6L Ford engine, often referred to as motor mounts, hold the engine in place and isolate the Ford's chassis from the engine's vibrations. If your Ford begins to shake at idle and you're experiencing increased drive train vibration while moving, you may have a faulty engine mount. The process of installing a new engine mount isn't particularly tricky, but does require some amount of physical fitness and upper body strength. If you fit that bill and you're well-versed in auto repair, you can tackle this job in about an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 car ramps
  • 2 wheel chocks
  • Socket set
  • Floor jack
  • Drive the Ford's front wheels onto the car ramps. Shift the transmission into park, push the parking brake pedal down and shut the engine off. Chock the left rear wheel to prevent the Ford from accidentally rolling.

  • Climb under the side of the Ford with the bad engine mount with your socket set and the floor jack. Remove the nuts on the engine mount's bottom studs using the socket set.

  • Lift the 4.6L engine with the floor jack until the engine mount studs clear the frame. Unbolt the Ford's old engine mount from the engine with the socket set. Remove the mount by hand.

  • Hold the new engine mount against the 4.6L engine by hand. Bolt the mount to the engine with your socket set.

  • Lower the engine with the floor jack slowly until the new engine mount studs clear the frame. You may need to raise and lower the engine more than once to get both mount studs through the corresponding holes in the frame.

  • Install the nuts on the new engine mount with your socket set. Climb out from under the Ford with the floor jack, old engine mount and socket set. Move the wheel chocks, release the parking brake pedal and back the Ford off the ramps.
