How to Repair the Windshield Wiper Motor in a 2003 Honda Accord

A clear windshield is crucial to driving safety in your 2003 Honda Accord. Your Accord's wiper washer system has three major components. The first is the wiper reservoir tank and wiper jet system. This sprays clean water onto your windshield. The second component are the blades themselves. The third is the wiper motor. The wiper motor is a small motor that powers a mechanism that actually moves your blades. If your wiper blades do not engage when you turn them on you will have to replace the wiper motor.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Replacement wiper motor
  • New rubber bushings (optional)
  • Open your hood and remove the negative battery cable to prevent electric shock while you work on your wiper motor. Use your socket set to loosen the cable's retaining bolt.

  • Locate your wiper motor. It is mounted on the driver's side, on the rear of the wheel well. It will look like a square metal box and will have a plastic plug plugged into it.

  • Remove the wiring plug. Do this by squeezing the two tabs on each side of the plug as you pull it away.

  • Remove the four bolts that mount your wiper motor to the wheel well. Use your socket set to remove these bolts as well.

  • Pull the old motor off and examine the rubber bushings that fit around each bolt. If the bushings are brittle and worn it is a good idea to install new ones. However, if the bushings are in good condition you can reuse them on your new wiper motor. Remove the old bushings, if they are in good shape, by simply sliding them off the bolt and slipping them onto the bolts on your new wiper motor. Or, if you've bought new bushings, slip those around the bolts on the new wiper motor.

  • Set the new wiper motor in place and install the retaining bolts, tightening them down with your socket set.

  • Replace your negative battery cable.
