How to Reset the EBCM in a Pontiac

The electronic body control module (EBCM) in Pontiac vehicles is a standalone computer responsible for controlling the body-related functions such as the interior lights, air bags, and power seat functions. Each time the EBCM detects a problem with one of the body-related systems it stores a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in its programmable memory. In order to reset the EBCM, any stored trouble codes must be cleared from its internal memory with an automotive scan tool.

Things You'll Need

  • Automotive scan tool
  • Depress the vehicle's parking brake and shift the transmission into park or first gear (manual shift transmission). Turn off the engine and connect an automotive scan tool's data cable to the vehicle's diagnostic data port, mounted underneath the driver's side dashboard area.

  • Turn on the scan tool and select "EBCM" from the main menu. Chose the "Codes" option from the EBCM sub-menu.

  • Select the option to "Clear All Current and Stored DTCs." Wait while the scan tool clears the trouble codes.

  • Remove the scan tool's connector from the diagnostic data port and start the engine. Verify that the "Serivce Vehicle" light is not lit up.
