How to Disconnect the Airbags in a Chevy Lumina

Most cars, like your Chevy Lumina, come equipped with airbags. The airbags deploy to cushion you during an auto collision to prevent injuries or possible death. If you choose to not want your airbags to deploy, you can disconnect them and remove them from your Lumina. Some people aren't fans of airbags and would rather not have them. There are some precautions you need to take to prevent the airbags from deploying during this process.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Open the driver's side door and pull the hood latch to pop your hood. Open the hood and locate your battery in the front right side of your Lumina. Use the wrench to loosen the bolt on the negative post of f the battery. Pull the negative cable from it to disconnect it. This will prevent your airbags from deploying and possibly causing injuries.

  • Open the fuse panel on the passenger side of the dash and check the diagram for the airbag fuse slot. Remove the airbag fuse to fully deactivate the airbag system. Close the fuse panel box.

  • Unscrew the panels of your steering column with the screwdriver and remove the panels. You will see the driver's airbag in the column. Unscrew it from behind the steering wheel. Pull the airbag out until you see the wiring harness it's plugged into. Unplug the airbag from the wiring harness.

  • Replace the steering column panels and screw them back in place securely. The driver's side airbag is now disconnected fully.

  • Open the glove box and unhook the straps on each side to remove the glove box door. Unscrew the glove box itself and pull it out of the dash. You will see the passenger airbag. Unscrew it from inside the dash and pull it out. Unplug the airbag from the wiring harness inside.

  • Replace the glove box into the dash and screw it back in snugly. Reattach the straps to the glove box door and close it.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable and use the wrench to tighten the bolt in place. Your airbags are now safely disconnected.
