How to Adjust the Alternator Belt on a 1996 Toyota Corolla

A loose alternator belt can cause low voltage throughout the vehicle's electrical system, leaving many electrical functions improperly operating. The belt needs to be tight to turn the alternator at a speed fast enough to generate the correct voltage to power the electrical system. Most novice mechanics can adjust the alternator belt in a few minutes with a few basic tools. While adjusting the belt, inspect it for any signs of excessive wear or cracks and replace if necessary.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Pull the hood latch release lever. Open the hood and support it by placing the hood prop into the appropriate hood prop hole.

  • Loosen the alternator pivot bolt, located on the side of the alternator, with a socket wrench.

  • Loosen the alternator lock bolt, attaching the alternator to the alternator bracket, with a socket wrench.

  • Turn the adjusting bolt, located under the alternator and accessible from the front, with a socket wrench to loosen or tighten the alternator belt. Turning the bolt clockwise will tighten the belt, while turning it counterclockwise will loosen the belt.

  • Tighten the alternator lock bolt, attaching the alternator to the alternator bracket, with a socket wrench.

  • Tighten the alternator pivot bolt, located on the side of the alternator, with a socket wrench.
