How to Install Side Glass in a Saturn

The side windows of your Saturn are the most vulnerable spot on your car. This means that as your car ages, there's a good chance that at some point you're going to need to replace your side windows, both to maintain visibility and to avoid fines for having cracked windows in your vehicle. While window replacement in Saturns tend to be involved, it is still a quite doable project for a do-it-yourself repairman.

  • Remove the side mirror if you're working on one of the front doors of your Saturn. Different Saturns will require different approaches, but typically speaking you'll need to remove a screw in the trim, pull the trim off, disengage the wire connectors that operate your power windows if your Saturn has them, and finally remove a nut that holds the mirror assembly to the door frame.

  • Pull the seal strip out. It's the long, black, plastic strip that goes between the glass and the top of the door. You should be able to just pull it out by hand if you start at the end.

  • Unscrew the screws holding the door panel in. They should be arranged around the bottom and sides.

  • Pull up on the door panel to disengage the clips, then pull the panel towards you and away from the door.

  • Disengage any wire connectors attached to the panel. Pressing down on the tab on the back of a wire connector with a flat head screwdriver will disengage it, causing it to pop out of its housing.

  • Pull out any insulation or water shields that may be behind the panel. Older Saturns that have been serviced in the past may be missing these. If yours still has them, the insulation should look like black felt, and the water shield will look like a clear plastic sheet.

  • If your Saturn has power locks, you will need to disengage any remaining wire connectors and remove the lock cylinder from the door assembly. Pressing down on the tab on the back of a wire connector with a flat head screwdriver will disengage it, and cause it to pop out of its housing. The lock cylinder, which as the name implies looks like a cylinder, should slide off.

  • Lower the window, then remove the nuts with a wrench or socket. The pair of nuts you need to remove will be clearly visible near the top of the window track, behind the window.

  • Push the glass upward to disengage it from the track, then pull it out of the door.

  • Slide the new glass into the track and over the regulator studs. The studs are the frame that lowers and raises the window.

  • Tighten the window nuts back into place.

  • Reassemble the door panel.
