How to Remove the Rear Bumper from an E46

The rear bumper fascia on the Mercedes E46 is made of durable ABS plastic. Some owners remove the factory bumper and replace it with an aftermarket bumper to give the E46 a more aggressive sports car look. In some cases, you must remove the bumper to complete vehicle repairs. Regardless of your reason for removing the bumper, you will find the process is relatively straightforward and requires only a few basic tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Socket set
  • Remove the black plastic pushpins from the black liner located on the back of the bumper fascia by pulling out on the center of the pins and then pulling down on the black liner.

  • Remove the bumper trim lining the outer surface of the bumper. The trim clips into place. Wedge a small flat-head screwdriver between the edge of the trim and the bumper. Pull the trim off the bumper.

  • Locate the bolts securing each front corner of the bumper to the sheet metal on the rear quarter-panel. Remove these bolts with a socket and ratchet.

  • Slide the bumper straight out to remove it from the Mercedes.
