How to Mix Auto Paint in Spray Gun

Automotive spray paint is easy to use, but only after you know the steps to properly mixing it. After purchasing the paint from a paint store, it cannot be put in a spray gun and sprayed on a vehicle. If this is done, the paint will not leave the spray gun correctly and will not adhere to the surface of the car properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Paint
  • Reducer
  • Clean paint can
  • Large measuring cup
  • Stir stick
  • Funnel
  • Spray gun
  • Purchase your paint and reducer from the same manufacturer and line. Reducer made by one company should not be mixed with paint made by a different company. They could have a chemical reaction and cause imperfections in the paint once it has been sprayed onto the car.

  • Use a clean, metal paint can to mix the material. Pour some paint into a measuring cup and take note of the amount. Pour it into the clean can. Pour the same amount of reducer into the measuring cup and make sure the amounts are the same.

  • Pour the reducer into the can with the paint. Use a new stir stick to thoroughly blend the two liquids. This should take at least two minutes of constant stirring.

  • Use a funnel to transfer the mixture from the can into a spray gun. Secure the lid and it is ready to be sprayed onto the vehicle.
