How to Replace the Fuel Pump on a 1998 Chevy Suburban

The most noticeable failure of the fuel pump is fuel leak. Another noticeable failure is when the rate of acceleration slows especially at high engine speeds. This where replacing of the fuel tank comes in. Replacing of fuel pump in a Chevy is a very easy task because its fuel pump is located in front of the engine on the driver’s side making it to be easily accessed.

  • Park the vehicle on a flat place that is level. Make sure that you set the parking brake. Open the hood to gain access to the relay panel that is behind the battery. Disconnect the fuel lines starting from the bottom of the fuel pump. Loosen the single hose clamp that is used to attach one fuel line to the fuel pump. Loosen it by turning the screw on the hose clamp with a flathead screwdriver in a direction that is counterclockwise.

  • Pull the line from the pump in order to remove it once the clamp is loose and then loosen the second line which is screwed into the fuel pump using an in-line nut. Use a wrench to loosen the second line and then pull it away from the fuel pump. Remove the two retaining bolts of the fuel pump using the wretch and then pull the pump away from the engine to remove it. Each side of the pump contains a single bolt.

  • Clean the mating surface of the pump using a gasket scraper. Also ensure that you clean the place where the fuel pump was attached on the engine using the same cleaning material. Coat one of the sides of the new fuel pump gasket. Use gasket sealer to coat that side after which you press it against the fuel pump. Also coat the other side using the gasket sealer and press the pump in place on the engine.

  • Put the retaining bolts of the pump into the engine but through the fuel pump and tighten them using the wrench. Reconnect the fuel lines under the pump. Also, slide the hose using the hose clamp on top of the brass nipple that is situated under the fuel pump. Use the wrench to tighten the screws on the clamp using a flathead screwdriver to put the hose in position. To ensure that the replacement is completed successful, tighten the nut appearing at the rare of the other fuel line.
