How to Check the Automatic Transmission Fluid in a 2000 Grand Am

The 2000 Pontiac Grand Am has a transmission fluid dipstick located inside the engine bay. Use this dipstick to check the level of fluid in the transmission so you can ensure the transmission has the proper level of oil. If you do not check your transmission fluid, you risk damaging the most complicated piece of equipment in your Pontiac Grand Am.

Things You'll Need

  • Rag
  • Place the Grand Am on level ground with the engine running. Place the transmission in neutral and set the parking brake.

  • Open the engine hood and locate the transmission dipstick between the engine block and the driver’s-side fender well. The dipstick is yellow and rests in a black tube that extends down to the transmission.

  • Pull the dipstick out of the tube and clean it off with a rag.

  • Place the dipstick back into the tube and pull it out again. Compare the level of oil on the dipstick with the line scribed on the stick. If the oil level resides between the line and the end of the dipstick, the transmission is low on fluid. If the oil level resides between the scribed line and the dipstick handle, the level is OK.
