How to Install a Liberty Caliper

If the brake caliper on your Jeep Liberty ever goes bad a new one will have to be installed. A replacement caliper for your Jeep Liberty, with new brake shoes, will probably cost you about $75. However, you can save a significant amount of money on labor costs by installing the new caliper yourself. Before beginning installation, your Liberty should be jacked up and the old caliper should be removed already.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement caliper
  • C-clamp
  • Line wrench
  • Brake pads
  • Brake caliper pins
  • Mallet
  • Hole punch
  • Socket set
  • Jack stands
  • Jack
  • Lug wrench
  • Brake fluid
  • Attach a C-clamp to the new brake caliper you are going to install and compress it until the caliper piston is pushed down totally flush against the inside of the caliper.

  • Set the new brake caliper down over the brake rotor and install the brake line using the line wrench to bolt it into place.

  • Fit the brake shoes into the new caliper until you hear them click into position.

  • Slide the top brake caliper pin through the top holes of the caliper. Use a rubber mallet and a hole punch to tap it all the way through both top holes. Do the same to install the bottom brake caliper pin.

  • Line up the mounting holes of the caliper to the mounting holes on the wheel. Start threading the two caliper bolts in. Tighten the caliper bolts fully with your socket set.

  • Replace your tire and hand tighten your lugnuts into place.

  • Jack your vehicle up just enough to slide the jack stands out. Lower your Jeep Liberty fully to the ground. Tighten the lugnuts fully with your lug wrench.

  • Get into your Liberty and pump the brakes to make sure they feel tight.

  • Check your master cylinder brake fluid reservoir. If it needs to be topped off with a little brake fluid do so. Replace the brake fluid reservoir cap and shut your hood.
