How to Install an Alternator on a 2001 Toyota Corolla

Alternators generate electricity the same way as a DC generator. When the magnetic field in a conductor changes, it sends a current to the conductor. The Toyota Corolla has convenient placement of the alternator -- nearly top dead center of the front of the engine -- making removal and installation an easier task than for some vehicles.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Torque wrench

Removal

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  • Remove the alternator connector and wiring by disconnecting the plastic connector by hand.

  • Loosen the two alternator bolts connecting the alternator to the alternator bracket.

  • Remove the alternator belt by sliding it over the alternator pulley after the alternator bolts are loose.

  • Remove the two alternator bolts and remove the alternator.

Replacement

  • Place the alternator in place between the brackets.

  • Slip the drive belt over the alternator pulley. Install the two alternator bolts using 14 mm and 17 mm wrenches. Torque the 14 mm bolt to 18 foot-pounds and the 17 mm bolt to 40 foot-pounds. This will also tighten the drive belt.

  • Reconnect the alternator connector and wiring by plugging it in. The wiring will make an audible click sound when properly in place.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
