How to Re-Key a Nissan Car

If you have lost all of the keys to your Nissan, you can spend several hundred dollars to have the ignition cylinder lock and the door locks replaced so you can use a different key, or you can re-key your ignition by contacting your dealership. This will save you hundreds of dollars and take far less time to complete. Before you can re-key your vehicle, you need to obtain some information from your Nissan.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle registration or title
  • Legal picture ID
  • Locate the vehicle registration or vehicle title. Usually the registration is located in the glove box.

  • Locate the vehicle identification number printed on the registration or title and compare it with the number printed on the top of your dash in the driver's-side corner by the windshield. This simply ensures that you obtain the correct key from the dealership.

  • Contact your local Nissan dealership via telephone or e-mail and confirm that it can re-key or replace your vehicle's ignition key. If your local dealership offers repair services, it should be able to replace your key.

  • Take your vehicle registration or title to the dealership along with a legal picture ID to prove you are the owner of the vehicle, and the dealership will make you a replacement key that fits into your ignition.
