How to Reset the Security Light on a 1996 Camaro

The 1996 Chevrolet Camaro comes equipped with several warning indicator lights on the dashboard, among them the security light. Oftentimes with these lights, even after you fix the issue raised by the light, the light will not turn off. To reset the security light, you have two options: Reset it through the brake pedal method (which works for most modern GM vehicles) or disconnect the battery and wait three minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench

Battery Method

  • Remove the keys from the Camaro's ignition and open the hood. Switch off all electrical devices on the vehicle such as the radio or headlights.

  • Disconnect the negative (-) terminal from the battery using a socket wrench. Allow three minutes to pass.

  • Reconnect the negative (-) terminal to the battery. Turn the engine on to test the security light. If the light is still on, repeat the procedure or try the brake pedal method. If the light is off, turn off the engine and close the hood.

Brake Pedal Method

  • Turn off the Camaro's engine. Leave the keys in the ignition.

  • Fully depress the brake pedal of the Camaro. Remove your foot off the pedal and let it come back to its neutral position. Repeat this procedure three times in five seconds. That is to say, three repetitions of depressing and releasing the brake pedal.

  • Turn the key to the "On" position and check the security light. If the light is still on, repeat the procedure. Make sure all three repetitions are performed fully in under five seconds.
