How to Identify Rear Axles

Rear axles enable a vehicle to maneuver its back wheels. This type of axle places the strength of your rear differential in your back wheels. However, when your rear axles break down, you need to buy new axles. Before you buy new axles, you have to know how to identify this vehicle part. This helps you to purchase the correct axles for your vehicle.

  • Get on your knees and look behind your trunk. Then, glance underneath the back portion of your vehicle.

  • Look straight ahead. This enables you to see a tiny part that resembles that shape of a box in the middle of the back of your vehicle called the rear differential.

  • Cast your eyes to the left portion of your right wheel and to the right portion of your left wheel. Look for the shaft that attaches to your wheels and goes to your differential. This part contains a pair of rubber boots, and goes by the name of your rear axle. Your vehicle contains two such parts, because rear axles exist on both sides of your vehicle.
