Blazer Dash Removal

The dashboard in a Chevrolet Blazer sport utility vehicle contains numerous components such as the gauge cluster and the radio. It also conceals components such as the heater/ventilation module. Removal of the dash is necessary if you have to work on any of these internal components. Also, the dash itself can become old and worn out, and you might decide to replace it. Please note that removing a dashboard on any vehicle will take time and effort.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Flat trim tool
  • Ratchet
  • Extension socket
  • Star-head driver
  • Disconnect the battery with a wrench to make sure that you do not run the risk of getting electrocuted while removing the dashboard. Remove the cable to the negative terminal first, then the positive.

  • Remove the two lower dash panels on both the left and right side of the dash. Remove the two screws for each panel with a screwdriver, and pry each panel off its two clips with a flat trim tool, if needed.

  • Remove the bolts on the dashboard's pivot brackets at each end of the dash using a ratchet. An extension socket may help you reach the brackets. Remove the star-head fasteners surrounding the brackets with a star-head driver.

  • Unscrew and remove the four nuts for the steering column, located at the bottom of the steering shaft, using a wrench. Lower the steering column if possible.

  • Remove the single bolt at the bottom of the dash near the center, which fastens the dash to the steel brace behind it.

  • Pry out the grilles in the dash for the speakers and the defroster using a flat trim tool. Remove the dash mounting bolts previously concealed by these grilles.

  • Hold onto the dash. It should pivot toward the rear of the truck, allowing you to access the electrical connectors behind the panel. Disconnect these connectors, including the wires and antenna lead for the radio and the main electrical harness plug located on the dash's right side. You should now be able to pull out the dash.
