How to Change Sonata Shocks

The rear shocks on the Hyundai Sonata connect between the body of the vehicle and the lower suspension. The gas-filled shocks dampen bumps in the road so the driver and passengers do not feel them. Over time, the gas in the shocks can leak out, and you will eventually start feeling all of the little bumps in the road. The only way to correct the situation is to replace the worn out shocks with new ones.

Things You'll Need

  • Tire iron
  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • Socket set
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the rear driver's side wheel with a tire iron.

  • Place a jack under the rear frame just in front of the rear tire and raise the Sonata until you can place a jack stand next to the jack. Lower the car onto the jack stand.

  • Remove the lug nuts and pull the wheel off the Sonata.

  • Unscrew the bolt that secures the bottom of the shock to the lower suspension with a socket and ratchet.

  • Remove the bolt that secures the top of the shock to the upper shock mount with the socket and ratchet.

  • Pull the shock off of the Sonata and replace it with a new one.

  • Secure the top of the shock to the shock mount with the bolt, socket and ratchet.

  • Attach the bottom of the shock to the lower suspension with the bolt, socket and ratchet.

  • Remount the wheel onto the Sonata, thread the lug nuts on by hand then tighten each lug nut a 1/4-turn with the tire iron.

  • Raise the Sonata with the jack, remove the jack stand then lower the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts fully with the tire iron.

  • Repeat the process on the other side of the Sonata.
